Park Minute 74: Geese at Taughannock

On a frosty November dawn, Canada geese swim along South Point at Taughannock Falls State Park, In Cayuga Lake. The temperature dipped well below freezing in the Finger Lakes on the morning of Nov. 11, 2017. (The bright yellow band on the far side of the lake is mist illuminated by the sunrise.) Taughannock Falls State Park is near Trumansburg, NY and Ithaca, NY in central New York’s Finger Lakes region.

Finger Lakes Park Minute: Ithaca Falls & Buttermilk Falls Gush!

Heavy rains in late October burst over the waterfalls in the Finger Lakes of central New York, including Ithaca Falls and Buttermilk Falls (in Buttermilk Falls State Park) in Ithaca, NY, shown here. Both are in the watershed of Cayuga Lake.

Park Minute is produced by Tony Ingraham, Owl Gorge Productions, and is shown online and on PEGASYS, public access television channel 13 in Ithaca, NY. This is Park Minute #73.

Park Minute: Four Big Waterfalls around Ithaca, NY

Finger Lakes Park Minute 69.   Warm weather in February melted snow in the hills around Cayuga Lake and filled the waterfalls near Ithaca, NY. We visit the four biggest waterfalls: Ithaca Falls, Taughannock Falls, Lucifer Falls (in Robert H. Treman State Park), and Buttermilk Falls.

Park Minute is produced by Tony Ingraham, Owl Gorge Productions, author and publisher of the national-award-winning book, A WALK THROUGH WATKINS GLEN: Water’s Sculpture in Stone

Park Minute 68: Entering Glen Alpha, Watkins Glen State Park

“Glen Alpha” is the name given in the 1800s to the first interior section of gorge in what is now Watkins Glen State Park, the section beyond the Main Entrance, or Entrance Amphitheatre as it was once known. Watkins Glen State Park is the most popular state park in the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

Park Minute is produced by Tony Ingraham, Owl Gorge Productions, Ithaca, NY. See my award-winning book, “A Walk Through Watkins Glen-Water’s Sculpture in Stone,” available at the park’s gift shop and online. See my FaceBook page for the book.

Park Minute 66: Porcupine at Taughannock Falls

We don’t usually see porcupines in public around here, but during the long drought of 2016, this porcupine visited Taughannock Falls for a drink and a dip.

Perhaps his normal sources of water in the woods had dried up and he was forced to show up at this popular waterfall. This video was shot in September 2016 at Taughannock Falls State Park in Trumansburg, NY.

Park Minute 61: Taughannock Falls in Drought

The ‪‎Finger Lakes region of New York State has been in a severe drought this summer and this is particularly noticeable in streams and at waterfalls such as Taughannock Falls near Trumansburg, ten miles north of Ithaca along the west shore of Cayuga Lake. This view of the waterfall is from a lesser-known overlook along the North Rim Trail about 100 yards west of the popular Falls Overlook parking area. The raucous bird sounds at the beginning and end of the video are made by a raven. Park Minute is produced by Tony Ingraham of Owl Gorge Productions.

We begin this episode (#140) of Walk in the Park with a look at a dramatic section of the Cayuga Trail where it is perched on high bluffs over Fall Creek in Varna, east of the Cornell Campus. We are in a Cornell Plantations Natural Area.
