An area known as “Big Bend” along the Gorge Trail on the way to Taughannock Falls (in Taughannock Falls State Park near Ithaca, NY) is prone to massive rockslides. This summer, state park officials decided to pre-empt the next big slide by bringing it down in a controlled way. It required closing the gorge for about a month and excluding the public from the danger involved in the work. In this episode of Walk in the Park, we look at the geology behind these rockslides and explain what was done in this extraordinary case of “scaling.”
We also visit the upper gorge at Robert H. Treman State Park to learn more about the geology of our gorges that affect the behavior of their cliffs. Finally, the new visitor center at the Falls Overlook at Taughannock Falls State Park opened this week.
