The temperature dipped well below freezing in the Finger Lakes on the morning of Nov. 11, 2017. (The bright yellow band on the far side of the lake is mist illuminated by the sunrise.) Taughannock Falls State Park is near Trumansburg, NY and Ithaca, NY in central New York’s Finger Lakes region.

Trails Makeover

The Finger Lakes State Parks Trails Crew is improving our favorite trails. In this episode (178) of Walk in the Park, we go to upper Buttermilk Falls State Park with them and see how they have removed old, hazardous trail structures and built new stairs up steep slopes, boardwalks over wet areas, a “turnpike,” and even brought their building materials to the trail by canoe.

Making our Gorges Safer

Each spring, the Finger Lakes State Parks Scaling Teams rappel down cliffs over Gorge Trails, manually removing shards of shale that winter freezing has left perched on ledges. If they didn’t do this hard, dangerous work, called “scaling,” it would not be safe enough for us to walk in the gorges, for fear of falling rock. Scaling must be conducted annually in six state parks in the Finger Lakes region. In this week’s episode (167) of Walk in the Park, we take a close look at the scalers at work on the high cliffs in the upper gorge of Enfield Glen in Robert H. Treman State Park near Ithaca, NY. The scalers tell us and show us what’s involved.

Park Minute: Four Big Waterfalls around Ithaca, NY

Finger Lakes Park Minute 69.   Warm weather in February melted snow in the hills around Cayuga Lake and filled the waterfalls near Ithaca, NY. We visit the four biggest waterfalls: Ithaca Falls, Taughannock Falls, Lucifer Falls (in Robert H. Treman State Park), and Buttermilk Falls.

Park Minute 66: Porcupine at Taughannock Falls

We don’t usually see porcupines in public around here, but during the long drought of 2016, this porcupine visited Taughannock Falls for a drink and a dip.

Perhaps his normal sources of water in the woods had dried up and he was forced to show up at this popular waterfall. This video was shot in September 2016 at Taughannock Falls State Park in Trumansburg, NY.
